Elephants Try Saving Stuck Rhino from Hungry Lions

Hours of chaos erupted when a rhino got stuck in a waterhole near a pride of lions. A passing herd of elephants was alerted to the scene, giving the rhino a lifeline, and making for one of the craziest wildlife interactions that Latest Sightings has ever shared.

While visiting Etosha National Park, Kim Hathway and her friends were preparing to leave the Aus waterhole after an uneventful day when a lioness suddenly appeared. A pride followed, heading straight for the water, stirring excitement in the air.

Soon after, a black rhino emerged, exhausted from the heat, and collapsed into the muddy waterhole to cool off. At first, it ignored the lions—but something was wrong. Kim noticed the rhino was stuck in the mud and unable to move.

Sensing its vulnerability, the lions crept closer, cautiously assessing the risk. As they began to circle, a herd of elephants arrived and charged at the pride, temporarily scattering them. One elephant tried for hours to free the trapped rhino but eventually had to give up.

When the elephants left, the lions returned. Despite a few more interruptions, they ultimately flipped the helpless rhino, which led to its drowning. The pride claimed victory in this heart-wrenching encounter, witnessed by just a few stunned onlookers.
