Vanguard International shares the future of black grapes

Once a staple on food platters in the ’70s and ’80s, black grapes—often remembered for their seeds and decorative presence—are now becoming a rare sight in retail stores. Despite their rich dark blue-purple hue, sweet flavor, and nutritional benefits, black grapes have seen a decline in consumer demand and breeder focus.

As green and red grapes have taken top-shelf prominence, supported by growing popularity and breeder investment, black grapes have struggled to compete. The market’s attention has shifted toward newer green varietals, leading to fewer marketing dollars and less shelf space allocated to black grapes. In turn, consumers encounter them less frequently, further shrinking demand.

Ironically, modern black grape varieties have been improved significantly—offering better appearance, crunch, and taste. They’re easy to grow, transport well, and remain a healthy snacking option rich in vitamins and antioxidants. Yet, they’re often overlooked as breeders prioritize grapes with stronger sales performance.

Despite current challenges, there’s hope. With the development of exciting new black grape varieties and increasing interest in diversity within the grape category, there’s potential for a resurgence. The question is: are consumers and retailers ready to give black grapes their deserved spotlight again?
