Loving Mother & Herd Do All They Can to Save Baby Buffalo from Lions

When a hungry lion pride targeted a defenseless baby buffalo, things should have been over quickly. But, luckily, the very protective mother buffalo was still around and kept bashing the lions off her calf.

In the Masai Mara National Reserve, a mother buffalo put up a courageous fight against a pride of sub-adult lions after they targeted her calf. She charged ferociously, managing to momentarily drive off the predators. As the battle intensified, the lions used their ambush tactics, distracting the mother while one lioness lunged at the calf.

Despite her relentless efforts, the lions worked in coordination, overwhelming the mother. Just when the calf’s fate seemed sealed, the herd arrived in force, charging at the lions and forming a protective wall. Their intervention gave the calf a brief chance to recover, but survival remained uncertain. As the herd moved on, unable to stay for long, the lions ultimately pinned down the calf, making it their meal.

This gripping encounter highlights the buffalo’s unyielding spirit and collective defense, showing that even prey animals can stand their ground in the face of relentless predators.
