Wolves in winter because of lack of food they target big prey like horses and cow. Horse are strong and dangerous prey for wolf. Wolves hunt in pack to increase the efficiency and to hunt down big prey.
Horses are in pack in wild. And most of the time they threaten by wolves when they are alone. Wolves prefer old horses or youths. wolf try to avoid health horse or stallion because wolf risk to get injury or even to killed by stallion.
Wolf attack has in purpose to tired horse by wounding them from behind & to bite them in snout and try to mobilize the prey.
About month ago, I was walking with my dog near Zadar Croatia. Early in the morning I hear some howling, or crawling, just beside place where somebody have herd of sheep. Because of that I thought that were their dogs (they were not barking).
About one km further, again there was that crawling, or howling. This time, bit closer to me and my dog. Again I’m thinking – those dogs from sheep herd…maybe seems closer because of the wind?
So, now I’m about 2km further – there is that crawling again about few hundred meters from us, a bit closer again… I’m walking further, and I came in some pine tree woods. I went in the middle of that wood, and there is that crawling again, just about 100 m behind me and my dog.
This time several other ‘howling’s ‘answered to that crawl. I realize that those are wolves, I called my dog, get her under leash, and grab some stick from fallen tree… Now, I must go back with same road that I already passed – just under them…. Well, I was lucky, they did not attack me or my dog this time.
